Dithering fakes shades of grey using only two colours by scattering dots in clever patterns. Here is the same sample image through every method the tool offers, rendered in your browser right now.
Error diffusion vs ordered
Error-diffusion methods (Floyd–Steinberg, Atkinson, Jarvis, Stucki, Burkes, Sierra Lite) push each pixel's rounding error onto its neighbours, producing organic, photographic grain. Ordered methods (Bayer 2×2, 4×4, 8×8) compare each pixel against a fixed matrix, giving a regular, screen-printed texture that tiles and compresses well. Halftone grows a dot per cell, and Noise thresholds against random values.
